WSCAFE specialty coffee? Why Da Lat?

Wscafe specialty coffee is the high quality, special coffee products which we choose from partnered farms across Da Lat, Lam Dong, Vietnam. Our specialty coffee is always arabica variety with special processing methods and microlots. The coffee has special aromas and tastes with unique notes and cupping profiles.

Among many coffee growing regions in Vietnam, Da Lat - Lam Dong is deserved to be Vietnam's and the world's well-known place for specialty coffee. It is supported by four main unique characteristics.

The perfect altitude.

Da Lat - Lam Dong is located on Langbian plateau with the altitude from 1,200 meters to 1,500 meters above sea level (asl) which are perfect for growing specialty arabica coffee. It is surrounded by high mountains (with tropical and pine rainforests) such as Langbian mountain (2,167m asl), Bi Doup mountain (2,287m asl), Hon Nga (1,998m asl), Yang Bong mountain (1,652m asl).

Da Lat is on the East side of the Long Mountain (a.k.a Truong Son Nam) mountain range and receives winds with rich moisture from Vietnamese East Sea which dominates its coffee from arabica from the Southern side of the Earth.

Rich nutritious volcanic soils & outstanding climate.
Climate: tropical monsoon; two separate seasons: rainy season (from May to November) and dry season (from December to April). Average rain fall (mm) 1,750 - 3,150mm/ year. Yearly average temperature (oC): 17.5oC. Big gap between day vs. night temperate (about 10 °C) which creates special notes for arabica coffee.

The rich nutritious volcanic soils of Da Lat are very suitable for coffee, tea, artichoke, vegetables and flowers. This also helps it to become the "city of flowers" of Vietnam.

Long-lasting cultivation practice.

Da Lat has a long history with proud treasury of coffee production. During the French colonial times, original arabica (mostly, Bourbon (Grand Bourbon, Bourbon Le Roy), Typica, Moka, Caturra) had been planted in Da Lat in the late 1890s. Da Lat first was built as a real French city, which is now sometimes Da Lat is called The Little Paris, for the French officials with French-styled villas, houses, train stations, markets, churches, etc. And they brought coffee to plant there, and later to plant tea. Native Vietnamese people were also immigrating to Da Lat to support the economy there, and to plant vegetable, flowers and coffee. With a long history of coffee cultivation, the farmers in Da Lat mostly know how to proceed the right coffee beans for the best quality.

The private Da Lat arabica variety & hybrid.

Before Doi Moi in 1986, most coffee in Da Lat were original arabica. But Vietnam at that time had no way to export coffee to the world (due to economic embargo), the farmers lost their patience. After Doi Moi, Catimor has been introduced into Da Lat, coffee plantation & expansion had been boomed then. Catimor was planted in old farms with original arabica, then a cross pollination happened between Catimor and the original arabica to form a new hybrid of arabica. Da Lat farmers have spread these new arabica to cover other new farms in the areas. As a result, just call this “Da Lat Arabica”.

Our partnered farms.

For Da Lat specialty coffee alone, we are now taking a partnership with dozens of farmers in a mountain in Da Lat, the total output for specialty arabica is about 400 tons per year. As previously stated, we are also purchasing coffee from many farms. But our main sourcing region for specialty coffee is primarily from Da Lat.

The farms in Da Lat as a whole is expected to produce about 40,000 tons to 60,000 tons per annum for arabica, which among that we believe 10% can be considered as specialty coffee in no time. And it can increased year by year.

It is a great honor for us to work with coffee farmers from Da Lat because they are passionate about coffee and understand coffee cultivation & processing very well. We are not just partners but also friends, friends of mutually common interests and hobbies.
